At first, this series emerged from observing nature. These are large raw-earth sculptures shaped like leaves that curl in on themselves, twist, and thus settle into volume.

These leaves, suddenly and quite naturally, echoed formal reflections and mental images that had been working within me for some time. I was searching for forms.
These leaves were searching within me—I found them in nature. They were already there, perfect in their lines and proportions. Majestic, offered to anyone who knows how to look.

I took them as models, enlarged them, and then created variations around them. And in doing so, using clay, other things began to appear: bodies, garments, envelopes, shells, flames—something deeply organic, highly sensual, even sexual—slits, vulvas… everyone will see in them whatever they wish to see.

In the outline of a leaf, flat, in two dimensions, there are always just two symmetrical lines; but when they fold onto themselves and twist, they create an infinity of complex, generous, sensual volumes.

A beautiful lesson in sculpture.
They revealed themselves to be an incredible support for imagination and mental projection.
